Perserverance at Holy Rosary

Hello,

For the month of January we had the opportunity to talk about perseverance.  I opened up this lesson by having an entrance slip saying “What are some of my personal obstacles I had to overcome?”  I then discussed my personal hardships I had with sports.  I talked about how my football team was favored in High School to win provincials and got upset by a team that was 3-3.  We also discussed how in life you might want to give up and sometimes it’s hard to keep on going.  We noted how it might be difficult to overcome these obstacles.

I did this lesson with grades 1-8.  The students went beyond sports and talked about some of their obstacles they had with moving to Canada.  Holy Rosary is a very transient school and the students discussed the obstacles with moving to a new school and making new friends.    The assignment I gave them was filling in a helmet saying:

My obstacle was…

I overcame my obstacle by…

Some of the student’s obstacles in the older grades were death of a family member, moving to Canada, making new friends and competing in various sporting events.   The younger grades noted that their obstacles were more skilled based and talked about how hard it was to learn how to skate or getting a new teacher for the school year.
