Update on Goal Setting

My students wanted to show just what they had done the past few months.  Each week during the month of October we went through our short term goals and discussed how everyone was doing.  The students put gold stars beside their goals as they accomplished them.  They also came up with a cute way to show everyone that came in our class how well they were doing.(one that the kids insisted had to be in sight of our board so our mentor, Nate Hinze, would see it.)
The week before we got out for Thanksgiving break, we checked the few goals that hadn't been mastered yet, starred the ones that were completed, and hung them up with the rest.  Then I took a picture of all my hard workers.

My students were unbelievably excited to get started with Classroom Champions this year! The group I have now was in third grade two years ago when Steve Mesler came to visit our school and they all remembered him. I introduced our athlete by having the students complete a Breakout Box (if you don't know about these look them up: http://www.breakoutedu.com/ ) - so much fun and totally engaging. They had a variety of clues to solve to unlock the box where Tyler's picture and other prizes were hidden.

We then watched our first two videos from Tyler and the students were psyched to start planning their goals. We are working on academic goal setting so that was our focus right now and then we will add their personal goals in as we work through tracking our progress more. In his video, Tyler spoke about the importance of tracking our goals and this is a goal of mine this year. I want the goals the students have set to become a living part of our classroom and not just papers we hang on the walls, so we started goal journals like the one Tyler showed us! Students also made a video for Tyler showing him our classroom and school, which is posted separately.

We spent a lot of time discussing goal setting and having conversations about our goals, so the speaking and listening standards were definitely huge for us with this lesson. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.5.1
