Ready, Set, Goals!
Ms. Kwan and Ms. Leung’s classes were incredibly lucky to be
selected to participate in the Classroom Champions program! We are very excited
to have received our first two videos from our wonderful Olympic Athlete and
mentor, Akeem Haynes! Akeem is one of the fastest sprinters in the country! He
participated in the London summer Olympic games at age 20 and also graduated
from the University of Alabama! Thanks Akeem for taking the time to volunteer
to make these videos for us!
Our classes started with an introduction to this month’s
topic of goal-setting by discussing what a goal is and why we set them. We then
went ahead and watched the videos from Akeem. Akeem discussed the importance of
how goals give us structure and keep us focused!
More importantly, we talked about how easy it is to ‘want’ to
achieve our goals, but working for it and figuring out ‘how’ we can achieve
them would be a little harder. A lot of times we need to work hard, have
determination and patience to achieve our goals –Just like Akeem, who has
worked very hard to train to get to be where he is today!
Each student created 3 goals: one academic, one
fitness/exercise-related and one of his or her choice. We also added a ‘so’ to each
goal to describe what we would need to do to achieve them. Some goals we came
up with included:
- · I want to be a better reader so I will read more.
- · I want to be better at math so I will practice everyday.
- · I want to be better at Social Studies so I will look at maps.
- · I want to be better at gymnastics so I will practice every weekend.
- · I want to get better at helping care for animals, so I will rescue more animals.
We had some time to share our goals and we will be
re-visiting them to see how much we have accomplished! Sharing our goals to each other was also extremely valuable!
Students did an amazing job painting their skies and
creating our art work to show them climbing up the ladder to reach for the moon
and achieve our goals! We are going to have a wonderful year!
